About

Discovery Sports Club (DSC) is a volunteer-lead organization located in downtown Victoria, BC, aiming to bring together community members through recreation.

Our Story

DSC is comprised of two unique sports clubs that make up its members and are physically joined together by a unique heritage building clubhouse that we call our home. DSC holds regular social and fundraising events throughout the year, as well as provides event rental spaces for the larger community. The clubhouse provides a sense of pride in a physical space that we are proud to have as our own.

Our Role in the Community

Teams in both sports are often found piling into the heritage clubhouse after games on the weekends, having social gatherings and reminiscing of games and all the great memories they have made. DSC not only provides a modality of recreation in the community to encourage healthy living, but also provides a physical, local, and safe space for members of the community to gather, build strong relationships, and connect on their mutual love of sports.

The Clubhouse

Built in 1910, this Edwardian Classical Revival two-storey brick residence is one of the few surviving residential buildings on the northern edge of Downtown. The multi-hipped slate roof has multiple modillions in the eaves. Both sides of the house have two-storey angled bays under hipped roofs. The rear has a generous porch with spindle balusters and three chamfered posts. The front façade has a hip-roofed, two-storey angled bay to the left; to the right is a deep open porch with solid balustrade and Tuscan columns supporting a large hipped roof. The entrance has a glazed panel in the door and leaded sidelights and transom. The front corners are emphasized by painted quoins. Many windows are one-over-one double-hung sashes in combination with larger single-pane windows and leaded art glass transoms. The original concrete block garden wall imitates rusticated stone blocks.

The handsome building at 714 Discovery Street is now used as a base for Discovery Sports Club and as an office space. In the 1990s it was restored to its former grandeur, under the direction of Nigel Banks of Banks Design, and won a Hallmark Heritage Society Award.

Hear From Our Community

Riley I.

“The clubhouse has always been a home where I am proud to display my club’s history and achievements. It has been a location that I have built lifelong relationships with teammates (or opposition on occasion). I have spent many late nights in the clubhouse celebrating, commiserating, reviewing and slightly exaggerating about past rugby games.”

“Discovery Sports Club is more than just a building; it’s a second home. I love spending time there with my friends, creating memories and sharing laughs. It’s a place where I feel like I belong, a space that’s truly mine. Plus, I appreciate the rich history of both the building itself and the organizations that call it home. It adds a special touch to every gathering.”
